A youthful-looking complexion and sunny summer plans can coexist. If you are considering BOTOX® Cosmetic before a vacation, wedding, or special event, thoughtful timing, sun protection, and appropriate aftercare can help support a comfortable treatment experience.

Below, learn how sun exposure, heat, exercise, and skincare may affect your skin after treatment—and when to schedule your appointment before an important event.

What Is BOTOX® Cosmetic?

BOTOX® Cosmetic (onabotulinumtoxinA) is a prescription medicine injected into muscles to temporarily improve the appearance of moderate to severe forehead lines, crow’s feet lines, frown lines between the eyebrows, and vertical bands connecting the jaw and neck in adults.

Treatment time and the number of injections vary by treatment area and individual needs. Some patients may begin to notice results within a few days, with results developing over time. Results are temporary and may last up to four months for certain treatment areas.

BOTOX® Cosmetic and Sun Exposure: What to Know

Sunlight does not directly deactivate BOTOX® Cosmetic beneath the skin. However, heat and sun exposure may make temporary redness, swelling, or bruising at the injection sites more noticeable. UV exposure can also contribute to skin damage and visible signs of aging, so daily sun protection remains important.

1. Plan Ahead for Vacations and Special Events

Because results develop gradually and temporary injection-site effects can occur, schedule treatment well before an important event. Your provider can recommend an appropriate timeline based on the areas being treated and your treatment history.

For patients receiving treatment for forehead lines, frown lines, or crow’s feet lines, results may begin to appear within 1 to 2 days, with full results developing by approximately 30 days. Individual experiences vary.

2. Follow Your Provider’s Aftercare Instructions

After treatment, follow the individualized instructions provided by your licensed medical professional. These may include temporarily avoiding pressure or rubbing at the injection sites and postponing strenuous exercise, hot tubs, saunas, or other activities that significantly raise body temperature.

Contact your provider if you have questions about returning to exercise, swimming, travel, or other activities after treatment.

3. Protect Your Skin From UV Exposure

Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, seek shade, and consider wearing a wide-brimmed hat when outdoors. Reapply sunscreen as directed, especially after swimming or sweating.

Sun protection helps reduce the risk of sunburn, discoloration, and premature skin aging. Avoid applying skincare products directly over fresh injection sites until your provider says it is appropriate.

4. Exercise, Heat, and Sweating

Strenuous activity and significant heat exposure may increase temporary redness, swelling, or bruising immediately after an injectable treatment. Ask your provider how long you should wait before resuming intense exercise, hot yoga, saunas, or hot tubs.

Do not rely on general online aftercare advice in place of the instructions given by the medical professional who performed your treatment.

5. Temporary Injection-Site Effects

Some patients may experience temporary redness, tenderness, swelling, or bruising at the injection sites. These effects vary from person to person.

To help protect your skin after treatment:

  • Follow your provider’s aftercare directions.
  • Avoid unnecessary pressure or rubbing at the treated areas.
  • Limit heat and direct sun exposure if the skin is red or irritated.
  • Ask your provider before using cold compresses or applying skincare products.

6. Support Healthy-Looking Skin

BOTOX® Cosmetic temporarily reduces underlying muscle activity in approved treatment areas. It does not treat sun damage, uneven pigmentation, or skin texture.

A consistent skincare routine may include daily sunscreen, gentle cleansing, moisturizer, and products recommended for your skin by a qualified professional. Ask your provider before combining injectable treatments with facials, chemical peels, lasers, or other procedures.

7. Schedule Conservatively Before a Major Event

For a wedding, reunion, vacation, or professional photo session, allow enough time for results to develop and for any temporary redness, swelling, or bruising to resolve. New patients may benefit from scheduling farther in advance so their provider can assess their response before the event.

Any follow-up treatment should be based on a clinical evaluation. Treatments should be spaced according to the product’s prescribing information and your provider’s recommendations.
